Abstract:

This seminar introduces how multimodal AI and informatics link “satellites” (Earth observation, sensors, animal tags) with “site likes” (social media and digital traces) to address environmental challenges. I will first give a brief panorama of recent applications in climate and pollution modelling, environmental monitoring, and digital twins of cities and ecosystems. I then zoom in on wildlife tracking and protection, including cameratrap detection, individual identification, sentinel animals for antipoaching, and datadriven analysis of illegal wildlife trade and online wildlife markets. Finally, I connect these methods to digital health: how environmental exposures, online behaviours and regional context can be integrated into chronic disease cohorts to reveal environmentally driven patient subgroups and support personalised interventions in China and beyond.

Bio

I received my PhD in Computer Science and Informatics from Cardiff University, and afterwards completed two postdoc positions at the University of Leicester and the University of Oxford respectively under the supervision of Prof. Chris Brightling and Prof. Melinda Mills.

At Leicester, I worked on multiple regional and national level clinical trials supporting or leading informatics efforts, epecially during the COVID period. At Oxford, I led the informatics aspect in the ERC funded CHRONO project and also contributed my natural language process knowledge to several other European and UK funded research projects.

Look forward to seeing you!
