DAW-Cubase Experence
Lab content review
In our lab class on Wednesday, the teacher introduced us to several ways to make a normal sound different by adjusting it
1.Audio equalizer filter (EQ)
The other two frequency bands have been upgraded without affecting 800Hz (Lixin Old Senior ,2020)
Audio equalizer filter is a commonly used sound adjustment filter, which has contributed to the timbre, tone, and intensity. Constantly superimposed changes in several dimensions to form a specific style(Signal Processing - Principle and Application of EQ Equalizer, 2021). Simply put, the function of EQ is to individually increase or decrease the volume of a specific band without affecting other frequency bands. Adjustments bring different sonic characteristics.
3.Distortion
The unequal input and output indicate that the signal is distorted. It is used more in popular music and rock music, and there are many instruments that use distortion effects, and the electric guitar is a typical one.
After learning about several commonly used basic effects, we improvised in Cubase based on the sound material given by the teacher - I used a sound material of birdsong, heavy rain, and dog barking, and made it sharp by raising the frequency of the birdsong, which contrasted with the low sound of the dog barking in the rainstorm, and added a delay effect to the dog barking, which continued to sound after the rainstorm became smaller.

2.Delay
Delay is a signal processing technique that records the input signal and then plays it back after a period of time. When the delayed signal is mixed with the current signal, an echo-like effect is produced. Most people have had the experience of shouting in the mountains, with sounds passing between valleys and echoing reverberations.
4. Chorus
Chorus could rely on equipment to replicate the main melody onto other scales to create harmonic effects. Not only can it be used for vocals, but it is also commonly used on instruments such as bass and guitar, and in mixing applications, Chorus can help soften the sound of instruments

Experiment-Create a re-visualisation of the soundscape
At Thursday's lecture, we watched a lot of experimental videos that used different sound frequencies to visualize sound, for example, using sound to break goblet, changing the shape of water flow, making flames dance with sound frequencies, and so on. That maked me feel amazing, and my team member Danni and I tried it with Sonic over the weekend: adjusting the frequency to make the straw in the cup move.
As can be seen from the video, our experiment ultimately failed, and it turns out that it is not as simple as it seems in the video. We summarized two major reasons for the failure:
1. Volume: The volume of the phone was too small, although later we used two iPhones and an iPad at the same time to play the same frequency - the result was that nothing changed except for me and Danni who felt bad. But sound is generated by vibration, and the louder the sound, the louder the vibration, and imagine that we are in a midnight club, and the situation will be changed.

2. Meterial:It may also be because the cup we took in the experiment is made of plastic, and later by watching the video carefully, we found that the original video used glass, which may also be one of the reasons for the failure.
Improvement plan
We intend to change the test material without Bluetooth speakers or other tools that can increase the decibels of sound: use a burning candle (a material that is more likely to produce changes.
Comments & reflections
I was very fortunate to receive a feedback from Andrew who mentioned that the difference between vibration and resonance, and I looked up some materials to help me better understand this concept.
Definition
Vibrations are widely present in nature and engineering. Vibration is the oscillation phenomenon of the amount of motion (displacement, velocity and acceleration) in the mechanical system, and there is a special case called "resonance" in the vibration, which refers to the phenomenon that the amplitude of the system increases significantly when the frequency of the mechanical system is excited and the natural frequency of a certain order of the system is close.(Vibration" and "vibration", do you distinguish clearly, 2020)
Necessary conditions for resonance
1.Periodic external forces (forced vibrations)
2.The frequency of the external force is close to or equal to the natural vibration frequency of the system.
The hazards and exploitability of resonance
Hazards
Bridges collapsed, aircraft damage, avalanches, capsizing, noise pollution...
Exploitability
Instrument resonance box, resonance weapon, microwave oven...
