Research Interests
Research in the Zhu Lab is mainly focused on the genetic manipulation of bacteria in the phylum Bacteroidetes (now called Bacteroidota) and their unique mechanisms of gliding motility, polysaccharide degradation, protein secretion (type IX secretion system), biosynthesis of antimicrobial compounds, and pathogenicity on humans and animals. Genetic, molecular, and biochemical tools are typically used to investigate the gene/protein functions in the above processes in different bacteria.
One of the major strengths in the Zhu lab is genetic manipulation of bacteria to study the gene function in vivo. A variety of genetic tools including plasmids and strains are available in the lab. We are open to collaborations in any related field.
Type IX Secretion System (T9SS) and Gliding Motility
Flavobacterium psychrophilum and Bacterial Cold Water Disease
Flavobacterium psychrophilum is the causative agent of bacterial cold-water disease (BCWD) in salmonid fish, resulting in substantial economic losses in aquaculture worldwide. It is known that the type IX secretion system (T9SS) is involved in the pathogenesis of F. psychrophilum but the mechanism is not well understood. We recently developed genetic manipulation tools that function in multiple strains of F. psychrophilum. By using these tools, we are trying to identify the potential virulence factors associated with the T9SS in F. psychrophilum, and develop live attenuated vaccines to prevent BCWD.
