What is the meaning of the last tips in the assignment handout?

I cannot understand what is "Comparison of models and relative importance of variables", especially the meaning of "relative importance of variables".

The independent variables are suggested to be the population, illiteracy, income, and frost level. Some of them might be, but others might not be important/significant in the multiple linear models. Think about the AIC comparisons between models and the step() function.
