Title: Depressive mood among the elderly in China

Abstract: Depression is a serious global health problem and it is associated with the increase of age. As the aging population rapidly increased in China, depressive symptoms among the Chinese elderly are often neglected. This research employs a mixed method approach: by using China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Studies (CHARLS) to investigate the association between social class, social engagement and elderly depression in Chinese elderly. As for the qualitative part, it involves semi-structured interview and grounded theory to investigate 1) the social construction of healthy aging; 2) type of social activities elderly attend; and 3) connection between wellbeing and family relations.
