Title: Community dynamics of the sympatric mammalian assemblage in snow leopard habitat

Abstract: Conservation biologists employ surrogate species as a shortcut to monitor or solve conservation problems. Snow leopard (Panthera uncia), as op predators of alpine grassland ecosystem, is usually regarded as an umbrella and flagship species for its sympatric species protection and conservation marketing campaigns. However, such single surrogate species approach has been widely criticized because it ignores the species-specific survival requirements and species interactions. A multi-species approach is required to ensure that the sympatric species have gained the adequately protection. The aim of this research is to study the spatial-temporal niche partitioning and interaction between the snow leopard and its sympatric mammal species, thereby assessing the effectiveness of using snow leopards as a surrogate to protect the sympatric mammal community. Our goal is to improve the current conservation approach mainly focusing on single species in China and facilitate the regime shift from single to multi-species conservation.
