Title: Environmental filters and food resources shape breeding fitness of avian species across urbanization gradients
Abstract: Urbanization alters landscape and environmental conditions (i.e., land-use change, urban heat island effects, noise pollution and artificial light at night) that can affect wildlife. Despite the common approach in the published literature to investigate these multiple environmental factors separately, there is a research gap about their combined impact. To address this gap, we used a multidimensional framework to quantify the effects of urbanization on food resources and avian breeding fitness, and tested the framework with field data collected in Suzhou. During a single breeding season in 2021, we measured the environmental factors near nests and determined landscape urbanization within a 1.26km radius. Our aim was to understand how Barn Swallows adapt to environmental conditions associated with urbanization and whether environmental factors can act as filter for species in urban areas. The data processing is still on, so this time I will present a few preliminary results that could be interesting. Full exploration of the research questions and data will be given next time.
