Abstract:
Overexploitation by humans, such as hunting, is an important driver of global biodiversity loss. However, within-country overexploitation of wildlife is poorly understood, but is important for conservation policy. What is less known is the extent to which overexploitation affects the populations of wild species. In this talk, I will first introduce the assessment of the overview of illegal hunting of four vertebrate groups in China, using a court verdict database of over 9,200 convictions. I will then delve deeply into how the direct mortality impacts the populations of the declining migratory shorebirds in the East Asia-Australasia Flyway (EAAF). Our estimations of shorebird mortalities at stopover sites across China’s coasts during migratory seasons suggest that the combined effects of hunting, bycatch, and deterrence are overlooked threats to the decline of EAAF migratory shorebirds. Finally, I will discuss the knowledge gaps and potential ways to mitigate the impacts of overexploitation on wildlife in China, with a focus on mitigating shorebird mortalities across China's coasts.
