Symposium: Land-sparing and land-sharing in China’s biodiversity conservation

Date: 23-25 May, 2025

Location: Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University Yuefengdao Ecology Station, Kunshan, Suzhou.

Contact: Dr. Yi Zou (yi.zou@xjtlu.edu.cn)

Introduction: “Land-sparing” refers to a strategy where human activities and biodiversity conservation are spatially separated, while “land-sharing” allows conservation and economic activities to coexist in the same space. In China, the overall conservation approach is largely land-sparing (e.g. Nature Reserves and National Parks, Grain for Green project, etc.). However, there are contexts where “land-sharing” can also be effective, particularly in agricultural and urban biodiversity conservation. This symposium calls for the “land-sharing” contexts in China.  We aim to stress:

a) what region, kind of human activities and biodiversity are involved

b) how land-sharing can rival the economic benefits of land-sparing or bring other compensating benefits.
