Abstract:
Who is involved in the scientific process and why does it matter? I start this talk with some experiences from Sri Lanka as a young researcher, which convinced me that conservation is more likely to be successful if it is seen as indigenous and not foreign, and therefore it is important to have the field of environmental science open to people from all backgrounds. An early project looked at the field of conservation biology and documented very low acceptance rates for low income, often tropical countries. Journal policy changes could begin to change this situation. A second project looked at whether conservation NGOs display photographs of their leaders on their websites, thereby measuring their transparency about the diversity of their team. A new project investigates the format (in person vs. on-line) of conferences in the environmental sciences. It finds that post-COVID conferences are quickly reverting to in-person formats, despite known benefits to on-line formats including those related to reducing their carbon footprint and increasing their inclusivity. We end by looking at the many ways that on-line elements can be incorporated into conferences, especially for training and outreach.
Look forward to seeing you!
