Abstract:
Land surface evapotranspiration and its components, soil evaporation and vegetation transpiration, are key processes in the carbon, water, and energy cycles of the Earth system. Using remote sensing models and data from various satellite observations has become one of the important approaches for obtaining large-scale land surface evapotranspiration. Nevertheless, the accuracy of remote sensing evapotranspiration models based on energy balance under soil moisture stress still needs improvement. To address this, we coupled soil moisture into a dual‑source energy balance model, resolved the issue of mispartitioning of soil and vegetation component temperatures, and achieved accurate estimation of soil evaporation and vegetation transpiration. Incorporating these remotely sensing based plant transpiration, we captured forest water flux dynamics over flash drought-impacted forest areas in China. Unlike multispectral observations, plant transpiration correctly captured the rapid dynamics in the early stages of flash drought, where in summer and autumn daily transpiration declined by mean values of 14% and 6% in the first two weeks of flash drought.
