Previous work – pandemic transition – future projects

Biodiversity ecosystem functioning is a topic of interest since a long time. Meta-analyses of experimental studies showed an overall positive influence of biodiversity to a great variety of ecosystem functioning. However, the mechanisms underlying these effects are poorly understood. Experiments showed a trend towards facilitating mechanisms. However, this is just a mathematical description and not a biological mechanism. In the past we performed different microcosm experiments with marsh plants and microalgae to disentangle the influence of stress on biodiversity ecosystem functioning effects and showed that different measurements of diversity have a big influence. Besides some outliers on hazardous fungi on fruit and bird pollination ecology, I will focus in the future again on biodiversity of aquatic organisms with a focus on Microcystis.
