Title: Methane Emission in Rice System under Heatwaves

Abstract:

Recent heatwaves may trigger uncharted responses of the (sub)tropic rice system, but they are barely manipulated in field-like experiments. Consequently, diverse facets of rice security and sustainability under heatwaves remain poorly understood. Here we manipulated unprecedent wet and dry heatwaves during 2021-2022 in a sustained ratoon rice system. We show that heatwaves induced nonlinear or threshold responses of rice and fundamentally altered the redox homeostasis of plant-soil system. Soil temperature controls methane production (43%), yet methane emissions are mainly mediated by plant phenology. Future warming has nonsignificant effects. In short, we emphasize the importance of considering the instant plant responses to climate extremes.
