Title: Restored Grasslands on the Tibetan Plateau: Low Soil Carbon and Imbalanced Microbial Community Composition Highlight the Need for Native Grassland Preservation

Abstract:

The rapid and extensive degradation of Tibetan alpine meadows has significant ecological and socio-economic implications. The preservation of native grassland is essential in order to ensure environmental sustainability, as our study has revealed that restored grasslands possess lower soil carbon levels and an imbalanced microbial community composition in comparison to native grasslands. To gain a better understanding of the soil quality and microbial community composition and function in both native and restored grasslands, we conducted a comprehensive analysis with varying restoration years. The results revealed a significant decrease in soil organic matter, soil carbon content, and soil nitrogen content in restored grasslands, which can have a detrimental effect on soil fertility and carbon sequestration. Furthermore, the microbial community composition in restored grasslands was found to be dissimilar to that of native grasslands, potentially causing disruptions to nutrient cycling and overall ecosystem functioning. Consequently, our research highlights the importance of preserving native grassland in order to maintain healthy soil carbon levels and a balanced microbial community composition. To ensure sustainable restoration on the Tibetan Plateau, it is essential to implement proper management strategies, such as safeguarding native grassland areas and optimizing current restoration methods.
