Title: Landscapes, cities, and sustainability

Abstract:

Landscapes are where biodiversity and ecosystems reside and function. Landscapes are where people live, work, and play. Landscapes are where people and nature interact and coevolve. Cities, or urban landscapes, are quintessential examples of coupled human-environmental systems. Academics claim their disciplinary territories, but problems in real landscapes completely ignore and absolutely scorn disciplines. So, to make our landscapes beautiful, resilient, and sustainable, landscape scientists and practitioners of all kins need to work together more collaboratively than ever before. Yes, sustainability is the theme of our time (albeit the world seems going crazy at the moment!). Almost everything is relevant to sustainability, but ecology and geography provide the “material linchpin” for harmonizing wellbeing aspirations from us with ecosystem services from nature. I argue that this people-nature harmony can best be achieved on the landscape scales through research, design and planning, and coproduction of knowledge. If we can’t make our landscapes more sustainable, global sustainability is never to be achieved! In this talk, I’ll discuss how we can link landscape patterns to biodiversity, ecosystem services, human wellbeing, and landscape governance and design/planning to promote landscape sustainability.
