Title: Multi-scale multi-physics modeling for fluid-particle-pollutant interactions

Abstract:

Many complex processes in Environmental Science can be featured as multi-scale multi-physics processes. For instance, pollutant and sediments transport in rivers involve water-sediments-pollutant interactions (multi-physics), the scale ranges from micrometer (sediment particle scale) to meter (laboratory scale) and can reach to kilometer (field scale). It is a great challenge to accurately model these processes due to these multi-scale multi-physics features. In this talk, we will introduce several numerical methods including Lattice Boltzmann Method, Discrete Element Method, Random Walking Method, and Material Point Method. By combing these methods, it is possible to examine many complex processes in greater details which are not available before.

Brief Bio:

Dr. Pei Zhang received a PhD in Hydraulic Engineering from Hohai University in 2017. Then he worked as postdoctoral researcher at the University of Queensland, Australia from 2018 to 2020. In 2020, he joined the Westlake University as a senior research fellow and as an honorary research fellow at the University of Queensland. His research mainly focused on developing numerical algorithms for multi-scale multi-physics systems that can be found in many disciplines such as Environmental Science and Engineering. His research provides useful tools that can help us to better understand these complex systems.
