Training students to work effectively in groups is essential to preparing them for either further graduate study or the workplace. However, in an academic environment it is often difficult to evaluate individual contribution when assigning marks. Group collaborative tools such as version control software, project planning software, and wikis were originally designed with software development in mind, but can be applied to group collaborative work in almost any area. With proper usage, these tools can provide detailed information about each group member's contribution to the project. In this presentation I will discuss best practices as well as caveats in using group collaborative tools to estimate individual contribution to group projects, based on three years’ experience teaching group software project.
