Went to the Pudong Art Museum in the weekend. I got a general idea of European art history

European Art History

European art history can be traced back to ancient Greece and ancient Rome, both of which had a profound influence on art in later periods.

During the Middle Ages, Christianity became the dominant force, and religious art flourished in Europe, with architecture, painting, and sculpture all featuring religious themes and symbols. In the Renaissance period, there was a shift towards valuing the individual and humanistic ideas, and artists began to pursue freedom of expression and the portrayal of personal emotions. Renaissance works were characterized by realistic depictions of figures and the use of linear perspective.

The 17th and 18th centuries were the periods of Baroque and Rococo art. Baroque art was characterized by its sense of movement and grandiose style, emphasizing religious and political power. Rococo art, on the other hand, focused more on emotions and delicacy, with an emphasis on elegant and intricate decoration.

The 19th century was the era of Romanticism and Impressionism. Romantic art emphasized personal emotions and fantasies, seeking to go beyond reality in its representation. Impressionism, on the other hand, focused on capturing moments and changes in light, emphasizing the subjective experience of the observer.

The 20th century was the period of modern art, where artists began to challenge traditional forms and ideas of representation. Cubism, Expressionism, Surrealism, and other art movements emerged, leading to a diversification of art forms and styles. Contemporary art has become even more diverse, encompassing conceptual art, installation art, performance art, and various other forms.

European art history is a rich and diverse field, covering numerous art forms, styles, and movements. It not only reflects the changes in European society, politics, and culture but also has had a significant impact on the development of art globally.
