New Manager Onboarding Programme started on 13th April has been conducted successfully and completed on 25th May. This tailored designed training programme helped new managers grow in theoretical knowledge in people management, conceptual analysis of managerial issues, confidence and efficacy and people managing skill set. Participants also raised the awareness and reflection as a manager/leader under the coaching from the instructor, Dr. Chiachi Chang.
A “Graduation Ceremony” was held at the end of this training programme. Prof. Jorg Bley, Dean of IBSS, Prof. Eddy Fang, Deputy Dean of IBSS, Prof. Roberto Dona, Associate Dean for Profession Engagement of IBSS, and Nina Xu, Deputy Director of HR, were invited as guests of this ceremony and expressed the sincere wishes and expectation for all the participants. Within the guideline of XJTLU 3.0 version, this training programme provided a help path for the group of people managers at the middle level who are essential for the development of the University in a new era.
High-Impact Feedback and Listening that has conducted on 7th May aims to support the University staff members on job performance, growth and development. It also helps the participants build authentic and trusting relationships with others.
Sharing feedback is an essential part of an organization’s culture and an effective business tool that reaches across all levels. When giving feedback, it is supposed to clarify the difference between positive feedback and developmental feedback. Positive feedback shows agreement while developmental feedback includes the supportive materials for the response, such as personal feeling, the fact or rationale for the feeling and what good behaviour could be repeated in future, etc.
As a receiver during a feedback discussion, it is important to wisely choose the opportunities to seek developmental feedback, listen patiently and dig the intended purpose of the speaker. Handling and even eliminating defensive emotions that would occur in a feedback discussion is another key point to help create high-impact feedback.
Communication and Influencing Skills, which has been organised on 21st May, is ideal for challenging communication situations where staff members are expected to change their thoughts and behaviour, but cannot force change. This course is designed to help communication parties reach an agreement and have sufficient willingness to take action to eliminate misunderstandings. The course also provides communication skills to help staff resolve conflicts and improve competence.
During the training session, participants recognized the nature of "Influence”, completed the influencing skills test and discovered the tendency of “Persuasion” in communication. Participants with different persuasiveness tendencies were introduced to several techniques for synchronizing other people's ways of thinking, such as being careful when using the terminology, asking one open-ended question at a time and gaining buy-in through in-depth discussions.
For further information of staff training sessions, please refer to Staff Training Calendar AY2020-2021 Semester 2 with XJTLU intranet.
