It was a very awesome day! We had classes in the computer room all day and were taught to model by experienced teachers. There were lots of software to choose from, but considering we had only learnt Maya so far, the teachers matched our pace of teaching. To make sure everyone was up to speed, the instructor took us through a consolidation of Maya usage starting with the most basic of basic operations. New elements were also taught, namely changing model materials and UV and mapping of models.
In the afternoon, our teacher started to take us straight into a hands-on exercise. As our VR project was the Humble Administrator's Garden, our teacher found pictures of the building and showed us how to build it step by step. Although these Chinese buildings look particularly complex, they are not actually that difficult to model. With a flexible use and translation of the point, line and surface manipulations, together with other operations such as sensible cutting, we soon had the roofs built in a decent manner.
But we are beginners after all, and even if it is a simple operation, there are still a lot of things that can go wrong when you first do it. Both of our teachers were very patient and came down at regular intervals to help us, and everyone had the opportunity to ask questions and receive individual guidance. I learned a lot of new operations and became more proficient in using the software after many training sessions.
