Staff Training - Emotion and Stress Management in the Workplace was conducted on 13th July 2022, as part of Staff Training Calendar AY21-22. In recent years, the unexpected outbreak of epidemic has directly led to abrupt changes in work and life. As the University's core ideology says, XJTLU is an organisation that encourages our staff members to have “A happy life and successful career”. This training was designed to help staff members manage their emotions and stress when dealing with urgent but unpredictable "black swan" incidences in the workplace. During the training, participants shared their opinions on how to deal with the rapid and constantly changing future with “psychological science”, discussed on bucket lists with each other, and explored how to maintain a calm and peaceful mind, and regain motivation and enthusiasm for life and work. Throughout the whole group discussion session, all participants were deeply engaged in sharing their experiences and providing positive feedback to others. They might also discover the strength of “significant others” within the organisation and gain support from each other.

Staff Summer English Programme AY21-22, a programme especially open for non-native English speakers and routinely conducted during the summer periods every year, lasted from 18th to 22nd July 2022. It focused on the combination of written English and verbal English, building a strong practising environment for the participants. During this five-day learning journey, the participants practised the skills of critical thinking and speaking by considering the pros and cons of serval topics and exchanging views and ideas with their “classmates”. The instructor, Mr Bruce Applebaum, Senior Language Lecturer from the School of Languages, also provided functional language and structural guidance, which could help the participants express their key points in a professional manner. For further self-learning and practice, you may refer to the training materials here.

In the current world, focusing on improving productivity and quality while shortening production cycles and reducing costs may lead to conflict in the workplace. Staff Training – Resolving Workplace Conflict organised on 19th July 2022 was a customised training open to people managers leading a team. As people managers would not only experience conflict but also play the role of mediator, this customised training provided an opportunity for them to have in-depth discussions with each other and learn the different ways in which these two roles deal with conflict.

By using five key principles of communication through various case studies, participants practised how to apply the skills in real conflict and to make the right choice to prevent escalation when experiencing the conflict. Besides the standard case, participants also brought their own case for role-playing exercises, making the training more tailored and vivid. For the role of mediator, participants explored when to coach staff and when to step in and mediate. The instructor also coached the participants on addressing people’s personal needs to strengthen the commitment to resolve the conflict themselves, as well as working through people’s practical needs during the conflict discussions.

Staff Training – Maximizing Team Performance was another leadership and management training for people managers to lead their teams in a more proficient and professional way. Organised on 20th July 2022, this training focused on the five Team Success Factors—Results, Commitment, Communication, Process, and Trust, which would help to establish the systemic conditions that undermine a team’s cohesiveness, collaboration, and ability to achieve goals.

When it comes to the Team Success Factors in the real workplace, participants sorted out the accelerators and obstacles of team working, discussed the work points during different stages and periods, and shared their insights with the whole learning group.  Through a series of group discussions and role play, participants learned how people managers could foster an environment of collaboration and shared responsibility to achieve team goals, as well as focus their team’s efforts on high-priority actions that support the University’s goals.
