SUCCESSFUL E-DISCOVERY WEEK 2020 HELD
The 6th E-Discovery Week was successfully held between 12 and 16 October 2020. This year, aiming at promoting Library e-resources as always, the E-Discovery Week was featuring 4 activities:
- E-Discovery Challenge (over 1200 participants)
- E-Resource Training Workshops (8 training workshops & around 230 trainees)
- E-Discovery Board Game (2 sessions)
- E-Discovery WeChat Interaction (3240 readers)
SUCCESSFUL SCHOLARLY COMMUNICATION MINI-SYMPOSIUM HELD
The Researcher Academy @ XJTLU Library event was once again successfully held. On 28 October, more than 100 researchers from the XJTLU community joined the Scholarly Communication Mini-symposium–Gear up for scholarly publishing onsite or online. Three guest speakers, Ms. Qing Li (from IEEE), Prof. Johannes Knops (Department of Health & Environmental Sciences), and Dr. Jia Meng (Department Biological Sciences) have brought us with wonderful talks about scholarly publishing.
TRENDS in HIGHER EDUCATION NO.1 OCT 2020 RELEASED
Trends in Higher Education is an internal publication sponsored by XJTLU library, which covers policy and reform of higher education, the university strategy and planning, international and comparative education, university culture, and overseas research progress of higher education. Hot focus is also set additionally.
The publication collects latest scientific researches and tracks latest progress in higher education, and combines the educational work practice of XJTLU, providing effective reference and guidance to higher education practitioners and researchers.
XJTLU LIBRARY ACADEMIC BOOK & TEXTBOOK FAIR 2020 CAME TO A SUCCESSFUL END
XJTLU Library Academic Book & Textbook Fair 2020 was held at the South Study Hall, the 3rd Floor of the Library, which lasted for three days, form 27 to 29 Oct. There exhibited all kinds of original foreign-language academic books and had attracted lots of faculties and students to the fair to read and select books.
There were over one hundred faculties and students involved in book recommendation, and more than one thousand books were recommended on the fair.

XJTLU LIBRARY INTRODUCES "SHUXIANG SIP" SELF-SERVICE BOOKCASE
To optimise user experience and continue providing diversified services, XJTLU Library has currently strengthened its cooperative relationship with Suzhou Industrial Park Library by introducing a ‘Shuxiang SIP’ self-service bookcase.
Suzhou Industrial Park Library has a large variety of Chinese resources, which shares books with XJTLU Library. Its resources have always been a useful supplement to XJTLU Library's English collections. Through the online borrowing system, XJTLU staff members and students can easily borrow books from SIP Library without leaving the campus.
The "Shuxiang SIP" self-service bookcase is located at the east entrance of Central Building in North Campus, open 24 hours a day. CLASSROOM QUALITY ASSURANCE
MITS’s Classroom Management Team has been tackling the issues in modern classrooms. The work starting at 9 AM and trains the volunteers the basic troubleshooting steps including inspecting, testing, and fixing XJTLU’s modern lecture equipment such as computers, projectors, and microphones. They help identify malfunctioning equipment and potential problems for MITS technicians, providing a green and uniform classroom experience. MITS is committed to continuous improvement to quality learning environments.
IT SERVICE CENTRE
IT service center handled the issues for daily work. Including 5,931 tickets, 2,239 telephone inquiries and 2,955 on-site services. In addition, IT front desk undertakes the task of making cards, totally making 7,146 cards during the September and October.
IBSS FINANCIAL LABORATORY
IBSS teamed up with MITS to build a financial laboratory in the BS building. These labs provide real-world data and are used for more than just teaching. The lab's terminals integrate the most comprehensive and accurate market data, fundamental data, research, news, and analytics tools. Terminals include Bloomberg Terminal, Wind Financial Terminal, and Thomson Reuters Terminal (DataStream, Thomson ONE).
TAICANG HANDS-ON COMPUTER LAB
The XJTLU Entrepreneur College (Taicang) launched its first-ever Professional Development Programme (PDP). Taicang and MITS worked together to plan and deliver a huge number of training courses on topics related to Ali Cloud, Sugon, IoT (Inspur), Big Data, and AI training platform constructing. Thanks to the diligent work of the instructors and the technical expertise of MITS the project was an incredible success and one that both teams hope to replicate again in the future.

USING XJTLU EMAIL PROPERLY
Our university’s email address was recently listed in the Spamhaus blacklist (this issue has been resolved).
Many oversea universities use Spamhaus’s database for their Spam filtering system, which resulted in the undeliverable emails messages recently.
1. To take care of your account and password to avoid getting hacked which could result in unpredictable losses to individuals and the university.
2. To make sure the recipients address is correct. When sending batch mails to external recipients please make sure the external mail address really exists, otherwise our mail domain will be flagged as a potential sender of SPAM emails.
3. Do not send out large bursts of mail in a short time. It may appear as suspicious behavior to external mail servers.

TEDXXJTLU EXPLORES SYNTEGRATION
The 2020 TEDxXJTLU Annual Conference was successfully held on 17 October, 2020. Theme for this year’s conference is center around “Syntegration”, where 9 individuals with backgrounds in humanities, education, arts, science, and technology were invited to join as guest speakers to share their ideas and insights on stage. The audience were not only from the internal campus and the local community, but also from the livestream. We hope that by hosting the TEDxXJTLU event, we will be able to further encourage the exchange and interaction between the university and the general public, so as to foster a more international and diverse campus culture, while promoting the innovative creations of our students to a broader audience around the world.

STUDENT WORK DISPLAY | CREATIVITY IN THE TIME OF CRISIS
In times of crisis, we are living through history and our creative output could serve as witness to our era. Paintings, videos, music and other art formats have often captured the temperature of a time, documenting collective human experiences, anxieties, and hopes. Creative expression can help us make sense of the world and our place in it. Our students and graduates voice their anxieties and respond to unfolding events with creative pragmatism. In times of difficulty, student works amplified important voices and messages. The exhibition are opened to the public from 15 October to 30 November at Room 155, Central Building.

XJTLU IN THE MEDIA IN OCTOBER
During the past one month, XJTLU has been mentioned in media reports from outlets including Guangming Daily, China Education Daily, Jiangsu Television, Suzhou Daily, China Daily Net, China National Radio, Voice of Jinling Radio, China News Net and Sina. Topics included higher education exploration, XJTLU recruiting students who are blocked from going abroad, shared celebrations by staff and students for National Day and the Mid-Autumn Festival, experts’ views and student stories.
Researchers from XJTLU have also been sought for comment from a number of English media outlets including China Global Television Network (CGTN) and Campus Technology.
NEWS STORIES IN OCTOBER
In October, UMC has published nearly 30 pieces of English and Chinese news stories. The topics include HyFlex teaching, research, students’ stories, enrolment and employment, external communication and collaboration. Meanwhile, it is worth to highlight that XJTLU has been ranked in five of the 11 Times Higher Education (THE) World Subject Rankings 2021, which were announced on 28 October.

20 WeChat articles have been posted this month. The creative post ‘Midterm reminder’ has gain 9.7% sharing rate which is the best sharing of this month. As the PG application platform has opened, WeChat menu and auto-reply regarding to PG recruitment has also been updated.

In the post-COVID-19 pandemic era, the educational landscape of today’s world is undergoing radical transformation: ranging from online education on an unprecedented scale, uncertainties about studying overseas, to a surge in the use of digital technologies. Coping with the formidable challenges also has presented an opportunity for innovation and transformation at universities.
University Marketing and Communications holds the reception to enhance media’s understanding about XJTLU and showcase exciting initiatives, research, teaching, and other aspects of our university.

The existing Mike CRM system has reached the end of its product life cycle, and it will be fully replaced by the MikeX CRM, a system with highly-customised user interface and templates and with more advanced built-in functions. Please kindly note that the existing Mike CRM system will NOT be further supported since the beginning of NOVEMBER, 2020.
DESIGN REQUEST PROCEDURE AND FORM
To achieve a high efficiency in design and print support provided by UMC, this procedure is raised and expect cooperation with departments/offices across campus.
By clearly stating the steps of making a successful design/print request to UMC, this form aims to save time, budget and resources for both requester and UMC teams.
STAFF PORTRAIT PHOTO SHOOTING SESSION IN NOVEMBER
Staff portrait photo shooting is a regular photo session supported by UMC, it will usually take place on the second and last FRIDAY of each month. If this month's registration is full, you're more than welcome to join the photo session of next month.
